New Fuel Injection Tank Install

Last post, I told how my fuel tank started leaking. It had a good run and lasted a whole year. Problem is, I’m planning on keeping this car longer than a year. I was faced with a choice: try to fix this tank or go a different route.

Scale Model and Life/Car Update

Life lately has been quite a roller coaster. But how will I get you to click on this post with an opening line like that? Hmm. I’ll lead with the model we just finished building.

Firm Feel Upper Control Arms plus One Year Upgrades

It’s been a year since we got the car on the road. After driving it over the past year, one thing has really bugged me. The car likes to follow its own course. Ruts and lane changes were religious experiences- prayers were offered beforehand, sometimes fasting as well. What followed was a moment of terror, when I suggested where the car should go, then I waited to see if it would abide. Once the car was in the next lane, a offering of thanks was given.

Two things cause this: tires and not enough caster.

Fuel Injector Cleaning Round 2

I’ve been driving the Barracuda for a while now, but I can tell it’s still not running 100%. On cold start, it initially runs well, then will settle into a lope, then even out. At full throttle, the car just seems to lay down. If I reduce throttle a little, the car picks back up again. With part throttle acceleration, I’ll feel the car cut power, like flipping a switch, then sometimes it will come back without me doing anything. What is going on?

A friend of mine has an air/fuel ratio gauge that can be hooked into the tailpipe. He offered to hook it up so we could see what the mixture was doing. What it told us was that the engine was lean almost everywhere. Steady state cruise seemed fine, but acceleration was lean.

Why is it lean? In my mind there are a couple possibilities. Either the pump is not pumping enough or the injectors are still dirty. I decided to send off my injectors for professional cleaning and flow testing.

My theory on why the engine is behaving like this is that the PCM is switching between open and closed loop operation. Open loop does not check the air/fuel ratio with the oxygen sensor, closed loop does. Open loop happens on cold start and full throttle. Closed loop is during cruise typically. If the injectors are not flowing what the PCM is programmed for, it will not work right in open loop. During closed loop, it can send more fuel to the engine because it sees that it is lean.

Over and over on web forums, I had heard of WitchHunter Performance for cleaning. I decided to give them a shot.

New Exhaust System Install

Please note, this post contains sponsored links.

If you’ve been following this build for a while, you’ll know that the exhaust that came with the car was in pretty bad shape. It stopped before the axle and the mufflers were rusting out. They were in need of serious repair.

My wife politely asked if there was a way to keep all the exhaust fumes from entering the house while the car was running in the garage. I told her if the car had tailpipes that most of it would go out the garage door. And that, my friends, is how I talked my wife into getting new exhaust.

The Conclusion of the Project

Conclusion of the project. That sounds so final. Don’t worry, this isn’t the end of the blog. It is the end of the budget portion though. I wanted to go over what I learned, what the numbers ended up being and my impressions of the car.

Project Update and Road Trip!

My all time favorite car show event is the CHVA Father’s Day Car Show in Yreka, CA. Why is it my favorite? It’s the first show my dad and I attended with our Dodge Dart. It’s a nice drive and a nice venue. My goal every year has been this event. I thought I could make it last year, but my PCM decided otherwise.
